「翻訳」を英訳すると「translation」。その語源はラテン語の「translatio」で、“ある地点から別の地点への移動”を意味すると知り、何が「移動」するのだろうと考えた結果、「視点」が移動するのでは思うに至りました。Aという言語装置で表記された文章をAという視点で意味を認識し、その認識したものをBという視点でBという言語装置で意味を再構成する行為が「翻訳」。

そしてその「視点の移動」という言葉から、本来壁面に掛けられる平面絵画を床に設置してみたところ、物の見え方、あるいはどこにいてどこを眺めているのかについて思索を深めることとなりました。

In a meeting with our collaborator, Professor Kanazawa, I learned that the English word “translation” comes from the Latin translatio, meaning “a movement from one place to another.” This led me to question what it is that moves, and to consider that it may be the perspective that shifts. Translation is the act of perceiving meaning through the linguistic system of A from the perspective of A, and reconstituting it through the linguistic system of B from the perspective of B.

From this idea of a “shift in perspective,” I placed a painting—normally hung on a wall—on the floor. This led me to reflect more deeply on how we see things, and on where the viewer stands and how—and from where—they look.
